Curriculum by Program

The Department established its Graduate Institute of Bioinformatics master's program in Academic Year 91 (2002), began admitting undergraduate and executive master's students in Academic Year 92 (2003), and established its doctoral program in Academic Year 96 (2007). Renamed the “Department of Bioinformatics and Medical Engineering” starting in Academic Year 104 (2015), it has progressively built a complete academic ladder spanning the undergraduate day program, master's program, executive master's program, and doctoral program.

Undergraduate Program

The Department established its Graduate Institute of Bioinformatics master's program in Academic Year 91 (2002), began admitting undergraduate and executive master's students in Academic Year 92 (2003), and established its doctoral program in Academic Year 96 (2007). It was renamed the “Department of Bioinformatics and Medical Engineering” starting in Academic Year 104 (2015).

The undergraduate curriculum includes College core courses (9 credits, required for all students) and Department core courses (39 credits, required for all students, covering foundational courses in biology, chemistry, information science, mathematics, and other fields). The curriculum is both foundational and in-depth, and incorporates cross-disciplinary elements so that graduates possess cross-disciplinary skills.

History of the Department's Professional Tracks
  • Academic Years 104–105 (2015–2017) | The Department's professional tracks were: Biomedical Informatics Track (24 credits, required for the Bioinformatics track) and Biomedical Engineering Track (24 credits, required for the Medical Engineering track).
  • Academic Years 106–110 (2017–2022) | The Department's professional tracks were: Biomedical Informatics Track (27 credits, required for the Bioinformatics track) and Biomedical Engineering Track (27 credits, required for the Medical Engineering track).
  • Since Academic Year 111 (2022) | The Department's professional tracks were renamed: Precision Medicine Track (27 credits, required for the Bioinformatics track) and Smart Medical Devices Track (27 credits, required for the Medical Engineering track).

Master's Program

Course requirements for the Department's master's program:

1Credits Required for Graduation

The minimum number of credits required for graduation is 30 credits; for students admitted from Academic Year 105 onward, this is 27 credits (including 3 credits for the seminar course and 3 credits for the master's thesis). Students must pass their thesis or technical report to graduate.

2Elective Courses

Graduate students must take at least 21 credits of professional courses. Courses taken in the College of Information and Electrical Engineering or the College of Medical and Health Science are limited to 2 courses (6 credits), and require the advisor's approval and a completed “Office of Academic Affairs – Course Credit Recognition Application Form” before the student may take the relevant courses in another department's master's program at this University.

Executive Master's Program

Course requirements for the Department's executive master's program:

1Credits Required for Graduation

The minimum number of credits required for graduation is 30 credits. Students must pass their thesis or technical report to graduate.

2Elective Courses

Graduate students must take at least 21 credits of professional courses. Courses taken in the College of Information and Electrical Engineering or the College of Medical and Health Science are limited to 2 courses (6 credits), and require the advisor's approval and a completed “Office of Academic Affairs – Course Credit Recognition Application Form” before the student may take the relevant courses in another department's master's program at this University.

Doctoral Program

Course requirements for the Department's doctoral program:

1Seminar Course

After admission, students must take and pass the Department's 3-credit seminar course.

2Graduation Credits

Students must complete at least 15 credits in the Department's doctoral program, not including the seminar course or the doctoral dissertation.

3Degree Examination Threshold

The minimum requirement before the doctoral degree examination is to submit one SCI-indexed paper, or one EI (journal)-level paper together with one EI (conference)-level paper's acceptance letter or proof of publication. The advisor need not be the corresponding author, but excluding the advisor, the student must be the first author.
