The Advantages of  Developing Multiple Skills
We are living in a fast-paced technological era. The question of how to have competitiveness in the job market? How can high school students choose the right department then find a decent job after four years of undergraduate training? The “business administration master” of Japan, Kenichi Ohmae, proposed a concept of “pi person,” which means that one skill is not enough in the new era. A person possesses a second or multiple specialties becomes the “pi person” who has integration ability. This person is a favorable employee in the workplace. In 2012, the job recruitment company 104 andthe Business Weekly Cooperation conducted a joint survey on high-demand occupations. The survey concluded that the “pi person,” those with more than two specialties, have the advantages in three highs: high demand, high growth, and high salary. “Quality changes” becomes the driving force in creating new added value, even new occupation, and new industry. One of the aims in the Department of Bioinformatics and Medical Engineering is to cultivate a “pi person” with dual specialties; that is, biomedical informatics and medical engineering, to conform to the demand of the new technological era.

Excellent Faculty Members
All the faculty members in the department hold a Ph.D. degree in the various field of specialties, including information technology, bioinformatics, medical information, biotechnology, physics, and chemistry. Some of the faculties are medical doctors and experts in industries. Among these faculty members, Professor Jeffrey J.P. Tsai (former professor of University of Illinois, Chicago and the founder and current president of the university) is the heavy-weighted scholar in information technology. He is a fellow of the AAAS, IEEE, and SDPS. Also, Professor Phillip C-Y Sheu (as well as the professor in the University of California, Irvin) is the pioneer in international information electrical engineering. In years, Professor Sheu and Professor Tsai, both IEEE scholars, lead the Department in conducting research. Besides obtaining four three-year research grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology, MOST (formerly known as National Science Council) to elevate the research and development ability in private schools, they further promoted the internationalization of the department by organizing many IEEE international conferences, which included: (i) the IEEE Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering, (ii) the IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, and (iii) the IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia. Both of them are the leading figures in the department.

Joint Internship Program with Medical University
The Department, the China Medical University (CMU) and the China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) have signed an agreement on professional internship and priority employment. In addition to recommend outstanding students to have internship in the industry in the summer of the end of the junior year, the department also: (i) invites experts to give speeches, (ii) opens joint courses with the faculty members from CMU or medical doctors from CMUH, to introduce the advancement in medical sciences and the skills required for employment. We highly encourage the students to prepare themselves with skills for employment in the early stage of their study.
